On December 7, Vinnytsia hosted World Ukrainian Shawl Day (DUKH) – an initiative that unites people around Ukrainian traditions and support for Defenders. The event was founded by Lyudmyla Stanislavenko, who launched DUKH six years ago, bringing together five continents. In 2024, the main focus was on the authenticity of the shawl, with the event’s message being “The Shawl of Revival.” A key part of DUKH was raising funds for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Shawl as a Symbol of Heritage and Unity

For Ukrainians, the shawl is not just an accessory. It embodies spiritual strength, the connection between generations, and national identity.

“This symbol unites us in difficult times. The shawl is a reminder of our roots, of the values that help us persevere when it seems that no strength is left,” said Lyudmyla Stanislavenko.

This year’s program emphasized the importance of preserving authentic traditions. Guests had the opportunity to view a collection of vintage Ukrainian attire, attend masterclasses on tying shawls, and explore modern interpretations of folk motifs.

Charity as the Main Focus of the Event

One of the key goals of this year’s World Ukrainian Shawl Day was to raise funds for FPV drones for the 35th Separate Marine Brigade, which is carrying out missions in Donetsk region.

“It is our duty. While our heroes are on the frontlines, we must support them with all our strength. Every hryvnia matters because it brings Victory closer,” emphasized Ms. Lyudmyla.

A particularly emotional moment was the participation of Oleksandr, a soldier of the 35th Brigade and the brother of the event’s founder. His story reminded everyone present why these efforts matter.

“I see how people unite, and it gives me strength. Together, we are capable of much more than we think,” said Oleksandr.

Interactivity and Gifts

Organizers continued the tradition of engaging participants through flash mobs. People from different parts of Ukraine and the world posted photos with shawls, adding the hashtag #ДеньУкраїнськоїХустки. The authors of the best photos will receive prizes, including branded products and photo books.

World Ukrainian Shawl Day once again proved that traditions not only preserve national identity but also help unite efforts toward a common goal.
